Blotter: Super Bowl XLIV gambling news

Rss
As sports bettors from across the United States and around the globe head into the biggest single-day sporting event on the planet on Sunday, our experts have compiled the latest information on the betting lines for Super Bowl XLIV between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. The game promises to have plenty of action, on the field and at the sports book windows, as well as with many "underground" odds makers.

Indianapolis, champions of the Super Bowl in Miami three years ago, started as six-point favorites on the early lines nearly two weeks ago. Some sports books still have the Colts as prohibitive favorites, but the line has narrowed considerably since the announcement that defensive lineman Dwight Freeney suffered a torn ligament in his left ankle. Many online sports books have dropped the colts to a 4.5 point favorite.

The money line betting has taken an even larger hit with the news of Mr. Freeney's injury. At first, Indianapolis was a -220 (bet 220 to win 100), but that line has dropped to -200. Mr. Freeney had 13.5 quarterback sacks this year, but injured his ankle in the AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets two weeks ago, but will require at least another month before he will be fully healed.

The injury news has caused much of the betting action to shift in favor of New Orleans and their high-powered offense, led by quarterback Drew Brees, running back Reggie Bush, receiver Marques Colston and tight end Jeremy Shockey. However, New Orleans has struggled recently, losing their last three regular season games and barely surviving the NFC Championship Game against quarterback Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings.

The total, or "over/under" line, is expected to settle at fifty-six points. With these two strong offensive teams, combined with injuries on both defensive squads, much of the action is pushing the total even higher. Many observers are expecting an exciting, high-scoring game that could come down to which side has the ball last. For the struggling Las Vegas casino industry, the betting action for Super Bowl XLIV could be a long-anticipated bright spot.
