Blotter: Online gambling in Illinois

Rss

The Midwestern state of Illinois — best known for Chicago and corn — has moved to the head of the pack as a state that supports gambling expansion. Earlier this year, several of the state's politicians started pushing for new legislation that would allow video poker machines and slots in bars. Other proposed bills would increase off-track betting.

The most groundbreaking gambling proposal to go before Illinois lawmakers is one that seeks to legalize an online lottery. Illinois' current lottery program is one of the largest and most profitable in the country, and the cash-strapped state no doubt sees potential to generate more much-needed revenue by making the games available online.

Critics of the new lottery proposal fear that the state is sacrificing traditional morals for money. While a handful of other states already have online lottery programs, they keep them legal by selling tickets through a subscription service. Some anti-gambling groups have even suggested that Illinois' proposed instant access online lottery operation could be against current UIGEA laws.
