Blotter: New casino opening in West Virginia

Rss

Visitors to the stately Greenbrier Sporting Club near Charleston, West Virginia, will soon hear the sound of gaming chips alongside that of teacups and saucers. State government officials authorized the historical resort, located in the White Sulphur Springs region, to start offering live gaming last week. The club's new owner allowed the addition of several tables offering blackjack, three-card poker, roulette and forty slot machines by the end of October.

According to the club’s public relations director, the gambling area will be in a discreet section of the club so that the gaming activity would not disturb patrons who may not approve. The gaming location will be in the portion of the club formerly known as the Tavern Room and will be situated near the rear of the property. Gaming activity will be considered an additional amenity to the club.

Also, since the Greenbrier is a private club, gaming activities will not be open to the public. Access to the games will be limited to club members and their guests, as well as conventioneers who may be lodging in nearby hotels. However, the club is offering temporary membership packages for those interested in playing. The package offers players a night’s hotel stay, breakfast for two, and $150 worth of match play coupons.

West Virginia State Lottery Commission officials said that the club held a “test run” of its gaming facilities on Wednesday night for its members. The trial run was intended to test security and cashout procedures as well as allowing club members to try out the new games. The club’s new owner, who purchased the property after its bankruptcy proceedings, expects to have a full casino operation in place by next spring.

When the Greenbrier does start its casino, it will be the only facility in the state that does not come with a racetrack. The other four properties, Charles Town Races and Slots in Charles Town, Tri-State Racetrack & Gaming Center in Cross Lanes, Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort in Newell and Wheeling Island Racetrack & Gaming Center in Wheeling, all have either horse or dog race tracks attached.
