Tournament: Joe Cada wins World Series of Poker Main Event

Rss

The final two players at last year’s World Series of Poker Main Event featured a contest between the young Russian, Ivan Demidov, and a younger Dane, Peter Eastgate. This year’s last two contestants displayed an all-American duel between old and young, amateur against professional, and technophobe vs. online whiz kid. At this year’s final table, youth was served once again as Joe Cada took down the most prestigious title in poker.

Cada, a native of Michigan, broke the record of last year’s champion, Peter Eastgate, by becoming the youngest WSOP Main Event Champion at twenty-one years and eleven months. Cada earned US$8.5 million for his victory, along with the gold-and-diamond championship bracelet and the title of 2009 World Champion. Despite his age, Cada is also an experienced online pro, specializing in heads-up cash games and tournaments.

After the longest final table in WSOP history, Cada went into the final matchup against Maryland native Darvin Moon with nearly one hundred thirty-six million chips, compared to Moon’s fifty-nine million, an advantage of nearly three to one. Late in the tournament, the chip counts were nearly reversed as Moon doubled through Cada and the forty-five-year-old logger had the youngster on the verge of elimination.

Moon made several misplays during the lengthy final table that cost him dearly later in the tournament. Meanwhile, Cada showed his extensive heads-up experience by battling back and retaking the chip lead. Cada hit two pairs, nines and tens, when Moon bet big on a straight draw and missed. Cada pushed his stack to one hundred twenty million to Moon’s seventy-four million.

The final hand came when Moon pushed all-in while holding the queen of diamonds and jack of diamonds. Cada called with nine of clubs and nine of diamonds. The flop came with the eight of clubs, two of clubs and seven of spades, giving Moon no help. The turn was the king of hearts, scaring the crowd into thinking that Moon paired one of his face cards. The river was the seven of clubs, which led to Cada’s cheering section erupting in a roar for the new champion.
