Tournament: European domination and American drama at WSOPE's first Caesars...
Rss-
As we reported at the beginning of September, the WSOPE's first Caesars Cup has created a lot of hype within the poker industry. American captain Negreanu may have made some enemies when he wrote his team roster (Mike Matusow, for example, called the event a “****ing farce” after being excluded from the team). And while Europe's captain, Annette Obrestad, couldn't legally compete with her American foes on their home soil, that didn't stop her and her team of young guns from shooting down the legend-heavy American team. The atmosphere at the first Caesars Cup was so tense that often the only players sitting were the ones at the table.
Team America, largely considered to be the favorite with a combined total of 45 WSOP titles, was exuberant at the start of the event. Phil Hellmuth even recorded a video Tweet of the first official hand of the tournament. When Team America won, he chuckled and ended the feed with the optimistic sign-off of, “Team America with a huge chip lead. Yeah baby!” It was a chip lead that wouldn't hold, and Hellmuth didn't revisit his Twitter again until the first day of the Main Event.
Phil Hellmuth's frequent jeering was to be expected, but American captain Daniel Negreanu's open criticism of his own teammates shocked the large live audience. Both Team America members were silenced when they were handed a sound defeat in their doubles match. The victors? European sensation Bertrand Grospellier and Europe's online qualifier, John Harvey, an unemployed pipe inspector from Scotland. Harvey's response to his first major live tournament win? “Gee.”
It took the old man of the tournament to give America their first (and only) win. Doyle Brunson and partner Jennifer Harman put Euro-kiddies Annette Obrestad and Dario Minieri in their place. Sadly, Team America's comeback was short-lived. Team Europe won the fourth and final doubles match and went into the heads-up section of the event with a 3-1 lead. Captain Obrestad rallied from her doubles defeat to beat American pro Huck Seed in the first heads-up match, giving Team Europe the four points necessary to claim the first Caesars Cup title.
