Blotter: City Center: coming soon

Rss

As we reported last week, Las Vegas is expecting a major slowdown in development and expansion on the Strip. That said, MGM Mirage and their partner Dubai World have been working on an $11 billion project that's expected to change the face of Las Vegas forever. It's called City Center, and a large part of it is opening this year.

At 76 acres, the City Center project is designed to be a city within the city. In size, scope and cost it has set records. Despite the city's waning tourism revenues, the City Center project will optimistically add 6,000 rooms to MGM's holdings. MGM Mirage CEO Jim Murren is convinced that this is exactly what his company—and Las Vegas as a whole—needs right now to get back on top of the gambling tourism market.

With other major casino-resorts opening in foreign locales like Macao and Malaysia, Las Vegas has an uphill battle to stay competitive in a market it once dominated. In an interview with Fox Business on Thursday, Murren insisted that City Center would attract both international and American tourists, saying, “Las Vegas is coming back. City Center will help to stimulate that recovery.”
