Blotter: Chicago Mayor proposes government-owned casino

Rss

Despite dwindling gambling revenues in other parts of the country, many states are still hopeful that new gambling endeavors will solve the economy-inspired budget crises. Add Illinois to the list.

Earlier this year, Illinois passed new legislation allowing for limited gambling in bars and also gave the go-ahead for online horse racing. Now, Mayor Daley is suggesting that a major casino-resort could be just what Chicago needs to turn his city around.

The problem? Illinois' existing gambling operations have been met with mixed feelings from both the public and the capitol. Daley thinks that by making the casino government-owned they can better deal with “the repercussions of gambling.” Unfortunately, Daley's plans for the potential casino are the kind that no existing operator would willingly jump behind. Daley insists that the establishment be no-frills and that it not contain any food or even beverages, a move that will certainly please area bars and restaurants but that would probably not go over well with gamblers.

Coincidentally, Daley's casino proposal comes on the heals of his questionable decision to drain the city's reserves, leaving Chicago cash-strapped. Further discussion of a casino is futile until the plan is acknowledged by Illinois Governor Quinn and the state legislature.
