On December 16, CNBC will present a special on illegal gambling that may surprise the general public, but this will hardly be news to avid American gamblers. Victims of this summer's Wire Act crackdown — which resulted in the seizure of over $30 million in poker player account funds — can attest firsthand to the risks that come with defying the U.S. governments attempts at gambling regulation.
The special also focuses on several other forms of illegal gambling, like unlicensed sportsbooks and unregulated (and unreported) high stakes cash poker games. The report attempts to vilify underground gamblers by insinuating mob ties and portraying offshore casino and sportsbook operators as sleazy opportunists. The special will end with an overview of the recent debate over the legalization of online gambling, but it falls far short of being unbiased by denying air time for major players like Senator Barney Frank or representatives of the PPA.
