International: Blackjack-Gate claims four Polish officials
Rss-
Something is amiss in Poland's gambling industry, but this time around it's politicians, not players, that are trying to cheat the system. With the next Polish presidential election only one year away, Prime Minister Tusk (a presidential hopeful) is doing everything in his power to distance himself from this latest gambling scandal; so far, he's given four high ranking officials the ax, and with a new probe in place more are expected to go on the chopping block.
Blackjack-Gate began as an anti-corruption investigation spearheaded by a group of Tusk's political opponents. The group has alleged that a number of high ranking officials have taken lobbyist bribes in exchange for padding the approaching gambling tax hikes. While no officials have been charged yet, the Sports Minister, Justice Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and a member of the Economy Ministry voluntarily resigned this week. Tusk readily accepted and even encouraged their resignation as he struggled to uphold his “public trust” platform.
While world leaders have lauded Tusk's efforts to clean house, the Prime Minister's approval rating has dropped 6% since the first Blackjack-Gate allegations were made last week. In an effort to rally support, Tusk has promised to seek out and remove anyone and everyone involved and has also promised that the new gambling tax legislation will pass, unaltered, later this month.
