Editorial: Learning to play Sic Bo

Rss

Tired of the classic and looking for a new casino game to try online or in your favorite land-based establishment? While the classics - Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, etc. - can be found just about anywhere, there are a handful of other games that have also established their place in most major casinos and can of course be found online. One of these, Sic Bo, could provide just the type of entertainment and enjoyment that Roulette and Craps fans may be looking for as a change of pace.

Sic Bo has its origins in Asia (China, to be more specific) and is also knows as tai sai (大細), dai siu (大小), big and small or hi-lo. While it's been popular in Macau casinos and across Asia for some time, it's taken root in American casinos as well and has even found a place recently in the UK.

Basics

Sic Bo is a game of chance played with three dice. The is usually quite well lit and marked and may remind some players of roulette or craps tables with the betting possibilities clearly marked.

The object of the game is to either select the individual numbers, or a combination of the numbers, that will appear on the dice once they've been rolled. The betting possibilities and their payoff amounts are indicated on the table layout via the faces of the dice in their numerous combinations: single die numbers, 2 of a kind, 3 of a kind, etc. etc.

7 different types of bets exist

  1. Bets can be placed on any one of the six dice sides, 1 through 6. If that number appears on any one of the dice, the bet is paid at 1:1. If two of the dice come up with the same number, 2:1. If all three dice come up on that same number, 3:1.
  2. A bet may be made on a combination of two particular numbers. If those two numbers come up on any two of the dice, the bet is paid off at 5:1.
  3. Wagers may be made on the total of all three dice. The player can bet on any specific total from 4 to 17. The payoff on this bet varies from 6:1 to 50:1, depending on the total bet.
  4. Another bet is a wager of "small" or "big". A bet on small wins if the total of the three dice is between 4 and 10. A bet on big wins if the total is between 11 and 17.
  5. A wager can be made that a particular triplet will come up with a payoff of 150:1.
  6. A bet can be made on any triplet with a payoff of 24:1.
  7. A bet can be made on any pair of numbers turning up, with a payoff of 8:1.
Playing the game

Sic BoThe game starts once players have put their chips on the designated table sections (indicators) - i.e. once they've made their bets. Once the bets are in place, the dealer shakes the dice in a 'shaker' and then sets it on the table. The dealer announces the numeric value of each die and enters these values into the electronic device on the table and all winning combinations of the three dice are lit. The dealer then proceeds with payouts to the winners. Like we said, it's a relatively straightforward process!
