Editorial: European Poker Tour: Quick Intro
Rss-
As poker's popularity has skyrocketed over the past decade, tournament series have quite naturally increased in volume as well. The World Series of Poker (WSOP) seems to get bigger and better every year, and poker fans have an ever-growing list of celebrities and pros to follow and support at a variety of events.
One of those outlets, the European Poker Tour, is currently in its sixth season and may be familiar to many of our global and European GP readers. Sponsored and part-owned by PokerStars.com, the EPT was launched in 2004 to replicate the success of the US-based World Poker Tour.
To build interest and encourage fresh blood, the EPT buy-ins were about half what you'd see at the WPT. Players could and continue to be able to qualify via PokerStars.com and the tournaments are broadcase across Europe. The strategy has been successful - buy-ins have more than doubled since the laucnh and casino space has struggled to keep pace with demand.
The EPT allows 8 players at the final table, in constrat to the WPT which limits this to 6. Finalists and runners-up from the previous tournaments play against each other in the Grand Final for the title of European Poker Tour Champion, and a 1st prize north of €650,000.
The Tour hits ten different countries during the course of a season. These include the Ukraine, Spain, UK, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, the Bahamas, France, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy and Monaco. If you haven't seen it already and are a big fan of the WPT, you'll love the variety available at the EPT.
Next up: EPT Copenhagen, Nordic Open - February 16-21, 2010.
