Editorial: Are free online games worth playing?

Rss

While most gamblers initially think of the cash games at the big casino sites when they think about online gambling, the truth is that the free online games actually arrived on the scene first. In fact, the first casino-style games to hit the internet were little more than basic beta diversions designed for members of the earliest chat groups. Who knew that less than 20 years later millions of people would be paying to play slots, blackjack, and poker online? While the cash games may have overtaken their free counterparts in popularity, they haven't forced them into extinction, and there are still plenty of good reasons to play free online games.

As a reminder to our readers, when we talk about “free online games” here at GP we're talking about the good stuff: live poker, blackjack, baccarat, slots...pretty much anything you'd hope to find in a brick and mortar gambling establishment. We're not talking about the social site euchre you like to cheat on with your buddies or the solitaire you play when you should be working. These are games you'd usually have to pay to play, and they're of a quality that'd be worth paying for if you had to. If you're one of the few casino fanatics that's figured out how to operate a computer and yet you remain out of the loop about free online games don't sweat it; you haven't missed the bandwagon yet. You can pretty much find free games at any of the major online casinos and poker rooms.

If you're already playing cash games, or if you're a tightwad when it comes to where you spend your time, you might be skeptical about the value of free games. While it's true that for the most part you're not going to make any money playing these games, it's also worth noting that you're not going to lose any. You're getting the exact same experience right down to the live dealers and trash-talking opponents without having to rationalize your first deposit to your wife.

If you're a hardcore cash gambler or aspiring pro, free online games are a cheap and accurate way to test playing theories, strategies, or systems. Many seasoned poker players try the points-only tables first before heading to the cash felts. Which brings us to another point: if you don't have enough bankroll to spread around to multiple poker rooms, playing for free first gives you a chance to experience what each has to offer before making any final decisions about where to put your money.

Those of you that are going to refuse the goodness that is free online games can stop reading now. If on the other hand you're ready to PLAY, getting started is simple. You can find free games through a direct search, by selecting the free flash version of a casino, or by choosing the free version once you get a member account (which isn't always necessary). If you want to play poker for free, sign-up for a member account, and the lobby will give you two game/tournament menu options: cash or points. All new members start with a set amount of pre-entered points. As an added bonus, many of the poker rooms will even let their points players participate in free rolls.

FREE vs. REAL MONEY

Why is it that all the free games let many strategies work to a perfection and the real money game will work only briefly before the losing streak where no matter what you bet the outcome is the total opposite? Real Money games don't seem to be random!

I love free online games!!!

There is certainly nothing wrong with playing free online games...I think this is the best way to learn a casino game before risking your real money.
