Whether he'll support casino gambling in Massachusetts is the big question facing Governor Deval Patrick as he returns from vacation. The governor says he's still making up his mind. He had said he would decide by Labor Day, and says he's close to a decision now. But, he adds that the more he studies the issue, the more complex it gets.
Speaking to reporters after attending a union labor day breakfast, Patrick rejected the notion that moving ahead with expanded gaming would consume his administration at the expense of other projects. He also said various costly goals for his administration, such as reducing property taxes and adding 1,000 police officers, are not dependent on the anticipated millions in new revenues casino gambling would provide.
The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe has purchased land in Middleborough and plans to build a $1 billion casino there if lawmakers allow it.
