Bodog Appeals Against Court Judgment

19-Oct-2007, 19:43
Online casino website Bodog has decided to appeal against the judgment delivered by a court in Las Vegas regarding a breach of patent. Last September, a company named 1st Technology decided to bring Bodog before a US court for using casino software in breach of a patent apparently held by 1st Tech. Despite Bodog representatives not showing up at the court hearing, the judge fined Bodog $49 million and ordered the American domain name registrar to get rid of all Bodog affiliated websites.
Last Thursday, Bodog CEO Calvin Ayre launched an appeal to protest against the judgment. 1st Tech replied back by filing for a permanent injunction against the online casino which would prevent Bodog from being operational in the US. They also pushed for preventing Bodog from redirecting traffic from the now banned site to newly established ones, such as NewBodog.com and BodogLife.com.
The stakes may not be as high as people seem to suggest. In fact, much of Bodog's reputation is by and large intact. The online casino has lost in terms of rankings in search engines such as Yahoo and Google, but the company seems to be attracting many players from all around the world. Bodog (based in Costa-Rica) is still complaining that despite their company not being based in the US, a Nevada court ordered their domain name to be seized simply because it was using a US registered domain name.
