A gambling addict who lost his life savings is suing William Hill for over two million pounds after accusing the bookmaker of failing to stop him from placing bets.
Greyhound trainer Graham Calvert issued a High Court writ claiming to have lost his savings and seen his marriage collapse after taking out huge bets with the High Street bookie despite having asked to be banned as part of their self exclusion policy.
Calvert could not control an irresistable urge to place mammoth bets, squandering more than 400,000 pounds in just one week. His wife left him in December after finding out how much he owed.
Calvert, from Sunderland, now faces losing his home and has been threatened by people from whom he borrowed large amounts of money. He is suing William Hill for 2,052,972 pounds because he claims the bookmaker breached its duty of care by encouraging him to continue to gamble.
Calvert financed his gambling addiction by borrowing 1,420,000 pounds from four business associates, taking out a 23,500 pound bank loan and remortgaging his house.
