20-Mar-2007, 18:21
We know it’s still a bit early to get excited about this year’s World Series of Poker, but we can’t help it! The biggest poker tournament in the world has a captivating quality that somehow manages to keep everyone in the industry ready and eager for more information. It seems like it was just the other day that we saw Jamie Gold walk away with the Main Event title and the record-breaking purse. But, now that we are into the new year we can once again begin counting down the days and making our plans. Last week Harrah’s announced the schedule for the 2007 WSOP, which will begin on June 1st and run through to July 17th.
This year’s tourney offers “something for everyone”, according to WSOP commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. The addition of several new events makes it bigger and better than ever. "As part of our commitment to innovate for the benefit of all players, we've added nine bracelet events and created more opportunities for both amateurs and professionals to win poker’s most coveted prize”, added Pollack. A $2500 H.O.R.S.E. event, Mixed Hold’em events, and a $5000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em event will be added to the annual competition held each yeah in Las Vegas. There will now be a total of 55 events and the number of entrants expected to participate in this competition exceeds 9000.
When the WSOP was introduced, many doubted whether the tournament could generate enough interest to keep it going and, to prove all those naysayers wrong, the 2007 event marks the 38th anniversary of what has become the most prestigious poker tournament in the world. It will take place at the luxurious Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino for the third straight year and will be exclusively televised on ESPN, where an audience of over 21 million is expected to tune in from all parts of the globe.
Last year was a record-setting affair for the WSOP and many are wondering if the tournament can keep growing at the same rate. Last year there was a total prize pool of over $171 million, making it the largest purse of any competitive sports tournament. There were 8733 entrants in the 2006 WSOP and 870 of these found themselves in the money. The winner of the Main Event and its $12 million grand prize was reigning world champion, Jamie Gold (pictured below).

Concurrent to the WSOP tournament, the Rio will once again host the Gaming Expo, from July 5th to 8th. This free show will feature exhibitions from all over the world, all focusing on the gaming and poker industry. Here you will find information, products, books, service and a staggering array of other poker-related merchandise.
